Frances Webb Cumberland, 79, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.
Frances is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 62 years, George Herman Cumberland; two children, Herman Mitchell “Mickey” Cumberland and wife Sue, of Brandon, MS and Renee` Cumberland Brantley and husband Tim, of Southaven, MS; three grandsons, Kyle Timothy Brantley of Brandon, Kalen Hunter Brantley of Starkville, and Andrew “Drew” Nathan Cumberland of Brandon; a brother Kipps Gerald Webb and wife Carol of Southaven, MS and a sister Shirley Webb Cox and her husband, Tom Wallace Cox, of Philadelphia, MS and a host of nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her precious sister-in-law, Frances Cumberland Bruce and Bob of Jackson, MS.
To Frances, “Grandmother” was the sweetest name on Earth. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her three grandsons whom she adored. Kyle, Kalen, and Drew provided a constant joy and she was so proud of the young men they had become. Frances was an amazingly generous, kind, and loving woman to her family and friends. Even though she loved life, she never sought special attention. She possessed a selfless nature and was always doing for others. She was avery quiet and reserved person and only on rare occasions showed her wit. These special times always involved family. Her fondest memories were when the entire family was together for a week at the Neshoba County Fair and the annual family trips to the beach. She loved to play competitive bridge, loved to cook and bake, and tend to her beautiful red geraniums.
Sara Frances was born June 09, 1934 in Philadelphia, MS and was the oldest daughter of the late Bailey Kipps Webb and Docia Ray Webb. Frances experienced a wonderful childhood and was extremely close to her siblings, which is noted in her touching memoir entitled “Looking Back”. After growing up on a small farm and finishing school, Frances and George married and moved to Rankin County to live and start a family. She had an amazing work ethic which was demonstrated by having retired from two jobs. After attending Jackson Business School, she was employed by School Pictures, Inc (Target Photo, then Fox Photo) and retired as a District Manager after 25 years. Later she was employed by the Rankin County Board of Supervisors for 22 years, only retiring due to her illness. She believed that it’s not work if you love what you do, and it showed in her service to the people of Rankin County. Frances cherished her working years and co-workers.
Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” John 8:12. Sara Frances Webb Cumberland never walked in darkness after being baptized as a child in a family pond near her home. She followed the teaching of The Lord Jesus daily in the way she lived her life here on Earth. She now follows that light that leads to her final resting place in Heaven. She and George are members of First Baptist Church of Brandon and were active until her illness prohibited her from attending.
The family wishes to thank Hospice of Jackson for all their kindness and support, especially Miss Mable, as well as all the nurses and support staff. They were truly angels and this family has been blessed to have known each of them.
Visitation is 5-8pm Thursday, at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon and 10am until the 11am service in the chapel Friday. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Gardens in Brandon.
