Maila Beth Patrick Barlow StarMaila Beth Patrick Barlow, 55, retired registered nurse, a resident of Star and former long time resident of the Bethel area outside of Brandon , left to be in heaven on August 6, 2011 from Baptist Hospital in Jackson, after a twelve year battle with ovarian cancer. Born in Bossier City, Louisiana, Beth grew up on her parents’ farm in Gatesville, Mississippi, outside of Crystal Springs. She was a 1973 graduate of Crystal Springs High School and a 1977 graduate of University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Nursing. Her last nursing position was working at UMC in the Infectious Disease Department with children with HIV/AIDS. Beth had also previously worked as an office assistant in her husband’s CPA office in Brandon.
Prior to her illness, Beth had served as the pianist for eighteen years at the Bethel Baptist Church near Brandon. Beth appreciated this role in the Lord’s work, as well as enjoying the opportunity to share in singing as well as in speaking engagements, before and after her cancer diagnosis. She had been active as a Sunday School teacher, volunteer Bible study teacher with ladies through Beginning Again In Christ at the Rankin County prison, and a volunteer speaker with the North American Mission Board in Interfaith Evangelism. Her greatest passion was her faith in God, and she always looked for opportunities in sharing about her faith in Jesus Christ. Beth also enjoyed sharing about Biblical prophecy and prophetic events with her brother Michael and her late father.
Beth had a bright smile and was very much a “people person” who sought to encourage others. Beth’s mother always spoke how Beth learned to talk as a baby before she learned to walk. During her illness, even her doctors seldom saw Beth without her wig as she tried her best to not look like a very ill patient. She enjoyed cooking, eating out at lunch with her husband, and eating Chinese food and visiting with her cousin and friend Debbie Blackledge. Beth will be missed by many people, but she would remind us that we can join her in heaven if we trust Christ as our Savior and Lord. Beth was blessed with two long remissions as she was thankful for the additional opportunities to share with and encourage others. Beth was so appreciative of her many caregivers in the medical profession including those at Jackson Oncology including Dr. Lackey, Mississippi Baptist Hospital including those in the Hederman Cancer Center infusion clinic. St. Dominic Hospital and many others.
Beth leaves behind her husband of thirty-three years, Charles S. “Sandy” Barlow of Star, who was her next great devotion after the Lord in her life. She also is survived by her mother, Betty Patrick of Gatesville, brother Rev. Michael Patrick of Onida, South Dakota and his wife Marilyn, brother Allen Patrick of Gatesville and his wife Gloria, sister Tammy Lewis of Mendenhall and her husband Brett, a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, aunts, cousins, friends and loving church family at Star Baptist Church.
