Sandra K. Ates, 61, a resident of Brandon, MS, died Saturday, August 2, 2014, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 5, 2014 from 5 until 8 pm at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon and Wednesday, August 6, 2014 from 1 pm until the 2 pm Service in the Chapel at Ott & Lee Funeral Home, with full military honors.
Sandy was born on August 28, 1952 in Mitchell, SD to the late Robert Phillips and the late Margret Nelson Phillips. She had been a resident of the Brandon area since 1987 when she moved here from Gulfport, MS. She was of the Catholic faith.
Sandy recently retired from the Mississippi National Guard Public Affairs Office as a Master Sergeant. She was a great NCO for both the Mississippi Army and Air National Guard while in Uniform and an exceptional civilian PA Specialist at the Joint Force Headquarters as well. Her Passion for our Soldiers and Airmen was truly second to none.
Sandy’s favorite pastimes were playing video games and swimming with her grandsons. She cherished her two Boston terriers, Joey and Chester.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Pat Phillips.
Survivors include two sons, Joshua Switzer (Cher) of Pearl, MS and John Switzer, Jr. (Jan) of Brandon, MS; four sisters, Tammy Bultje of Plankinton, SD, Grayce Teves of San Jacinto, CA, Lynn Zoss of Stickney, SD, and Dawn Schrader of Fort Gibson, OK; three brothers, Robert Phillips, Jr. of Mitchell, SD,
Wayne Phillips of Muskogee, OK, and Mike Phillips of Mitchell, SD; and three grandsons, Taylor Switzer, Logan Switzer, and Luke Switzer.
