Ann Marie Kankkonen Freeman, a longtime resident of Hillsboro, and recently of Newton, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2015 at Lackey Hospital in Forest. Visitation was held on Tuesday, June 9, at 12:30 at Hillsboro Baptist Church with a celebration of life service at 1:30. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Freeman was born on August 12, 1921, to Finnish immigrants, Matts Frithioff and Hilma Johanna Kankkonen, of Astoria, Oregon. She graduated from high school and business school in Astoria and was working at the Siberian Ice Cream Parlor when she met a handsome young Marine from Mississippi, John Henry Freeman. Love blossomed, and when he returned from overseas duty in 1943, they were married at her parents' home. After tours in New Orleans and Washington, D.C., they returned to Astoria. In 1948 they moved to Hillsboro, transitioning from city life to the country, where electricity had not yet reached.
Mrs. Freeman loved her family and friends. One of her joys was hostessing and cooking for family get-togethers and club meetings, as well as taking meals to those who were hurting. Another joy was working at Paul Chambers & Sons store for over 20 years. She loved being outside in her vegetable and flower gardens. Many friends and family still have passalong plants from her yard. She loved music and spent many happy hours singing alto with family around the piano. She belonged to the Hillsboro Homemakers' Club where she utilized her artistic talents and a Bunko club that she so enjoyed. Mrs. Freeman also loved her Lord. She was a faithful member of Hillsboro Baptist Church where she taught a ladies' Sunday School class, sang in the choir, served on the Hostess Committee and belonged to the JOY Club.
Survivors include her children, John Jr. (Anne), Ken (Sandra), Diane Rives (David) and Gary (Angela); grandchildren, Trudi Norman (J.W.), Katie Paczak (Greg), Johanna Freeman, Emily Carty (Chuck), Will Rives (Whitley), Landon Freeman and Annalise McLain (Nate); seven great-grandchildren and one due in July; sister-in-law Esther Sparks (Richard); and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, John Henry; granddaughter, Traci Freeman; and her 12 siblings.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Hillsboro Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or the Baptist Children's Village.
