Arthur Morton

February 17, 1941 — February 21, 2016

Arthur Jefferson Morton passed from this life to be with his Heavenly Father on February, 21, 2016, while at his home in Brandon, Mississippi. Jeff was born on February 17, 1941 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, of his loving parents, Arthur Wilson "Slick" Morton and Jane Lawton Morton, both of whom predeceased him. Jeff is survived by his wife, Billye Sanderson Morton, and his two children, Angele Murray, of Laurel, Mississippi, her husband Duane Murray, their son and Jeff's grandson Brandon, Murray, and son J.J. Morton of Chicago, Illinois, his wife Carol, and their son and Jeff's grandson Samuel "Major" Morton, all of whom he dearly loved. Jeff is also survived by his two sisters and one brother, with whom he was very close, Mary Jane Morton Smith of Greenwood, Mississippi, Ruthie Coenen, of Rayville, Louisiana, and John Edward Morton, of Angel Fire, New Mexico.

Jeff graduated from Greenwood High School and thereafter attended Mississippi State University where he served as one of the managers of the Bulldog football team, which his Dad, Slick, had been the head football coach for several years previously. Jeff later worked with his father in the commercial construction business in Mississippi and Louisiana. His skills in performing takeoff and bidding work were widely used by area contractors on commercial projects. Jeff retired from the construction business several years before his death.
Jeff's hobbies and pastimes were pursued with the same vigor as his love for his family and work. One of Jeff's great passions was cooking on a barbeque grill and smoker and sharing his delicacies with family and friends. His love of Mississippi State and L.S.U. football was legendary, and even in the years when his illness took its toll, he would pack up his motor home and head to Starkville and beyond to follow his Bulldogs. He only quit that hobby when his family forced him to sell the motorhome! Jeff also became the family historian, as he searched all over the country for Morton family lore, which he preserved in pictures and news articles. Jeff truly loved his family and no conversation was complete without reference to his wife, children and grandchildren.

The funeral arrangements for Jeff will be on Wednesday February 24, 2016, and arrangements will be handled by Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Fannin United Methodist Church cemetery in Brandon, with Rev. Rod Borders and Reed McCaleb conducting the service and a eulogy by Billy Coenen, Jr.

Serving and honoring Mr. Morton as pallbearers will be Don Morton, Dickie Lawton, Fred Garrott, Dalton Fortenberry, Tommy Vaughn, Mac Alford; honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Hall, Luz dial, Brandon Murray, Samuel Major Morton, Don Kennon and Herbert Wood.
