Mr. Beacher M. “Ole Fox” King, Sr. passed away Sunday, September 15, 2013 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. Visitation is 5-8 pm Tuesday at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon. Services are 1 pm Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at the funeral home with burial in Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Pearl.
Beacher was born on September 11, 1923, in Carroll County. His parents were Sam and Eunice King and his father passed away when he was only a baby. He was raised mostly by his maternal grandparents in Sturgis, Mr and Mrs. Thomas Edison Hunt and his uncle, Mel Reid and Aunt Ruth. His mother re-married Rufus Randle Shurden, who was police chief of Greenwood at the time. They brought him to Greenwood to live with them when he was 12 years old.
Beacher enlisted in the US Army in 1943 with entry of service at Camp Shelby. He was then placed with General George Patton’s 3rd Army Corp of Engineers, building bridges while serving in Germany, Northern France, Normandy and Central Europe. Beacher was a charter member of the American Legion post 29 in Greenwood and loved and fought for his country. He worked at Liberty Cash Grocery upon returning from the Army and later worked and retired from the US Postal Service in Greenwood.
Beacher married Wilna Teal in 1942 and had three children, Beacher M. King, Jr. "Mack", Rose Ann King Dallas-Metz and Robert Randle King "Randy". Wilna passed away on Christmas Eve 2000 and he later married Evelyn Purvis King and resided in Greenwood until December 2012. After Beacher's illness, they resided in Ridgeland at "The Waterford". He was a member of First Baptist Church in Greenwood and a former member of Flowood Baptist Church.
Beacher was a frequent writer to the" letter to the editor" in the Greenwood Commonwealth for many years. He often signed his writing's as "ole fox".
He is preceded in death by wife Wilna Teal King and son, Beacher M. King, Jr. "Mack".
Survivors include his wife Evelyn; daughter, Rose Ann King Dallas-Metz "Rosie" and her husband Steve of Ridgeland; son, Robert Randle King "Randy" of Brandon; daughter-in-law, Janet King; sister, Jean Shurden Davis and her husband George of Dallas, Texas; step son, Ken Purvis and his wife Sally of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; seven grandchildren, Claire Wilkerson and husband Brad, Matt King and wife Lindsey, Rachel King, Mollie Dallas Davis and husband Lee, Will Dallas, Hunter King, and Drew King; nine great grandchildren, Ava Wilkerson, Blake Wilkerson, Hunter Wilkerson, Ashlee Wilkerson, Willa King, Vance King, Aiden Davis, Landon Dallas, and Katie Grace Dallas and a number of nieces, nephews and relatives. One of his greatest loves was making friends and reminiscing of past and present happenings. He was a loving daddy and husband and always wanted to "Make everyday an adventure."
