Betty Michelle Hillhouse, 11, went to her Heavenly Father Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Blair Batson’s Children’s Hospital in Jackson. Visitation is 12 noon Saturday, May 20. 2017 at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon. Services are 2 pm Saturday at the funeral home with at 4 pm graveside at Wilkes Family Cemetery in Jefferson Davis County. Elder Buddy Hairston will officiate.
Betty was a native and lifelong resident of Rankin County and of the Baptist Faith. She was born with Trisomy 18, (Edwards Syndrome) and had a 5% chance of survival for the first 10 days. Betty surpassed everyone’s expectations, but parents Mike and Lisa knew there was more in store for her and took little Betty home from the hospital when she was 24 days old. Surrounded by family, friends and love, Betty continued to grow.
Betty was in the 5th grade at Northwest Rankin Elementary School and had been with her teachers Jan Harkins and Kelly Gunter since kindergarten. Some words from her teacher, Jan Harkins, “Betty was our little angel. Those who were touched by her understood this. Her gentle smile could melt the hearts of those around her and though she never spoke a word, her voice and thoughts could always be heard. We will miss her every day, especially her winning smile and love for music. She will forever remain in our hearts. It has been a privilege to be her teachers and we’ll always hold dear the memory of Betty’s gentle spirit.”
Words from her Mommy and Daddy, “Betty was able to express that her life was full of joy. Her laughter in anticipation of life events let us know that she was to be valued as a gift straight from heaven. Betty was able to play jokes (stiffening her arm to keep you from getting her out of the car seat-laughing). She would pretend to be asleep to the point of snoring while at physical therapy and exhibited many behavioral characteristics that could be traced directly back to family members. “
