Betty Stephens Mikell of Brandon, MS, age 85, passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at St. Dominic Hospital surrounded by her precious family and friends.
Betty was born in Jackson, MS on November 20, 1931 to the late Vilous and Ezell Stephens. She was a native of Jackson and graduated from Central High School. Betty went on to receive her degrees in Art and Bible at Mississippi College. She married the love of her life, Thomas Stewart Mikell on December 23, 1949. They were blessed with their only child, Sheila Ann Mikell of Brandon.
Betty taught art classes at Jackson Academy from 1962 to 1964. Thomas and Betty moved to Bristol, TN and were the owners of WOPI Radio Station for a period of time. Betty was the voice behind many advertisements on the station.
The Mikell’s moved back to Prentiss, MS and opened Mikell’s Cleaners & Laundry and also Mike’s Men’s Shop. Betty completed an intensive course in floral designing from New Orleans School of Floral Designing and opened Betty’s Florist also in Prentiss, MS.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Stewart Mikell, her parents, Vilous and Ezell Stephens, and her sibling, Lucille Stephens Seemes. She is survived by her loving daughter, Sheila Ann Mikell, of Brandon, MS; sister, Freddie Stephens Gillespie (Bob) of Brandon, MS; 2 nieces, Laura Ready of Ashville, NC, Judith Johnstone of Memphis, TN and nephew Robert Gillespie, Jr. of Charleston, SC, along with extended family and a host of friends.
Betty enjoyed life! She loved to sew, garden, plant flowers and work with crafts. Betty was a member of First Baptist Church of Fannin, MS. She loved her church family and her pastor, Dr. Ron Bird. She will be remembered by many as “mama” Betty. Her favorite sayings to all were “Here’s the deal… and God Love!”
Pallbearers are: Jim McCaskill, Eddie Smith, Eric Thornton, John Byrd, Jeff Giles, Bob Gillespie, Bobby Robbins and Robby McCarty.
Service will be held at First Baptist Church of Fannin, MS on Saturday, August 12, 2017 with visitation starting at 1:00 P.M. and funeral service at 2:00 P.M. Graveside service will follow in Prentiss, MS.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be sent to First Baptist Church Fannin Building Fund, 101 Church Road, Brandon, MS 39047.
