Betty Lou Watkins Daniels, was born December 15, 1945, at Forest in Scott County, MS, one of seven children, born to Harvey and Estelle Wolfe Watkins. She died on March 14, 2012, at her home in Gulfport, MS with members of her family at her side, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Services were held at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home Chapel, in Gulfport, MS at 11:00 a.m., March 17, 2012 and at Ott & Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Forest, MS on March 18, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. with interment in Salem Cemetery in Scott County, MS.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Gulfport. After graduating college in 1965, she went to work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Jackson, MS. In 1973, she transferred to the Gulfport, MS FBI office. After 17 years of distinguished service with the FBI, she served as administrative secretary to the then Chief U. S. District Judge Walter L. Nixon, Jr. for several years. She later went to work as legal secretary to Ben Stone at Eaton and Cottrell (now Balch and Bingham Law Firm) where she worked for about 15 years.
In 1995, Bob Daniels, whom she later married, came into her life and was truly the joy and love of her life. He introduced her to Gulfport Little Theater. She became an active member, serving on the Board of Directors and as Chairperson of the Board. She was an active member of the Legal Secretaries Association having served as President, was a recipient of the Secretary of the Year Award, and was Mississippi's representative on the Board of the National Legal Secretaries Association for several years.
Betty Lou was a loving, caring sister, mother figure, and friend to many, with a great sense of humor and a knack for getting things done, no matter the challenge. She loved her God, her family and her host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert L. Daniels, Jr.; two brothers, Charles D. "Sonny" Watkins and Ira Watkins.
Survivors include her great nephew, Tom Bodiford, wife Noon, Stephensville, LA; three sisters, Nina (Isham) Cooper, Kemp, TX, Nell (Ray) Crout, and Janice Watkins, of Forest; one brother, Paul (Kay) Watkins, Forest; sisters-in-law, Barbara Watkins Halsell of Hatch, NM and Mary Watkins of Louisville, MS; three step-daughters, Susie (Jay) Patricks of Gulfport, Lynn (Terry) Terrill of Ocean Springs and Christie Daniels of Gulfport; several nieces and nephews.
