Bill Mayes

Funeral services for Mr. Bill Mayes will be conducted Friday, August 26, 2016 at 11:00 am from the Ott & Lee Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bowman Giles officiating. Interment will follow in the Salem Cemetery under the direction of Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Forest.


Music for the service will be provided by Mr. Larry Rigby.


Visitation will be Friday from 9:00 am – 10:45 am at the funeral home.


Billy Ottis Mayes was born June 5, 1932 at Conehatta to his parents; Willie and Bessie Powell Mayes. He passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at the Madden Lighthouse at the age of 84.


In the professional world, Bill was a truck driver, having been employed through Bean Drilling, J.B. Wolf Lumber Mill, and B.C. Rogers Poultry Company which took him to oil fields, lumber yards, and chicken farms throughout the Southeastern and Southwestern United States. Favorite pastimes were gardening and cattle farming. He was an avid Ole Miss Rebel Football fan. Mr. Mayes will be remembered for his love for his family and his faithfulness to the Lord and loyalty to Liberty Baptist Church, where he was a member.


He is preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Agnes Hollingsworth, Inez Hollingsworth, and Kathleen Rowzee and two brothers: Sam Mayes and Paul Mayes.


Survivors include his wife: Irma Jewell McMillan Mayes of Forest; one son: Billy Glenn (Jill) Mayes of Oxford; one granddaughter: Misty Leigh Mayes Murphy and her husband, Benjamin of Southaven; two great-grandchildren: Leighton Reese Murphy and Quinn David Murphy; two sisters: Gladys Sorey of Union and Jena Uzzle of Murfreesboro, TN; one brother: James Mayes of Lawrence; and a host of nieces and nephews.


Pallbearers will be Tyler Sorey, Ryan Sorey, Cody Sorey, Greg Ware, Stephen Myers, and Wesley Mayes.


Honorary Pallbearers will be the Men’s Sunday School Class of Liberty Baptist Church.


Memorial donations may be made to Liberty Baptist Church, 5129 Old Hwy. 80, Forest, MS 39074.
