Bobby Ray Madison born July 25, 1934, was a lifelong resident of Morton. He passed peacefully Saturday, January 23, 2021, at St Dominic Hospital after a brief battle with COVID.
Bobby graduated at the tender age of 16 from Morton High School. He loved math and always said his favorite teacher was Mrs. Cammie Stegall. He was a strong supporter of all their reunion activities. He attended the 50 + Year Reunion for the last time in 2017.
Right out of high school Bobby started working at Myers’ Grocery on main street and worked there for 25 years until it closed in the early 70’s. He then worked for the Sunflower in Morton and Pelahatchie. When they were bought out, Bobby went to work at Wal-Mart in Pearl, MS until he retired in 2017. He loved working in the grocery business where he could meet new people and stay busy.
As a young man, Bobby was an amazing roller skater. He remembers learning how to skate on the sidewalks in town with his friends. As he grew older, he skated in every gym and roller-skating rink around the south. He won many trophies in his skating career. He also loved going to the movies – Roy Roger’s westerns were always his favorite.
Bobby loved to play card and board games and it was difficult to beat him! When playing with the family he was accused of just being lucky or cheating! He would reply— “Nope, just skill!!!!”
He was also an amazing cook. The family’s main request for Bob was to make his “just like Pearlie Mama’s” from scratch banana pudding. There’s no other like it.
For the past few years Bobby has been a resident of Mississippi Care Center where he enjoyed all the activities. He really loved the Quarter and Banana Bingo!!! He usually had a banana or two as his winning in his room. He loved saving up all his candies and snacks to give to his great grand nieces and great grand nephews when they came to visit. He loved his fellow residents and going out for events.
Bobby is preceded in death by his beloved mother, Vera Pearl Huckaby Lewis Madison of Morton; his father, Capers Madison of Kalem; his brother, Dwight L. Lewis of Morton; his nephew Buddy Lewis of Morton; and his nephew Jimmy Lynn Chesnut of Morton. He is survived by his sister, Betty Frances Lewis Chesnut of Morton; his niece Judith Lewis of Morton; his niece Laura Chesnut Cook of Morton; and a host of grand nieces, grand nephews, great grand nieces, and great grand nephews.
