Charles H. “Sonny” Shamburger III, whose accomplishments over the years made him a highly-respected and beloved member of his community, has passed away. He was 77.
Sonny was so many things to so many people. A successful businessman in the insurance industry. A standout football player at Mississippi State University. A pilot. A Sunday school teacher. A great cook.
Sonny’ s accomplishments are nearly too many to list. But his best role was as the loving patriarch of a family who cherished him deeply. He will be remembered as a doting husband, father, grandfather and brother. His loved ones will cherish him for all their lives.
Sonny was born in Jackson on January 22, 1947, and raised his family in Brandon. He passed away on Nov. 21, 2024, surrounded by the family he dedicated his life to.
Sonny was known for his adventurous spirit and love for travel. He shared countless journeys with his parents when they were living, and his beloved wife, Peggy Agnew Shamburger. They explored the world together over their 50 years of marriage, a relationship that embodied the essence of love and companionship.
A proud member of Brandon First Methodist Church, Sonny served his community not just through faith and friendships in Christ, but also through teaching God’s love and grace as a Sunday school teacher.
Sonny’s enthusiasm for life was evident in everything he did, including his time spent playing football at Mississippi State University. His dedication to sports continued with his unwavering support for Brandon High School football and other athletic events.
Sonny was happiest when he was spending time with his family, which often involved him sharing his passion for cooking. He loved to see people fellowship over a good meal.
Sonny is survived by his loving wife, Peggy; his sons Charles H. “Sandy” Shamburger, IV (Stephanie) and Christopher Douglas Shamburger; and his adoring grandchildren Anna Claire Shamburger, Charles “Charlie” Shamburger, V, Scott Hudson Shamburger, Tori Tullos, and Alex Tullos. He also leaves behind his sister, Susan Shamburger (David) Trewolla, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends who will all miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his daughter Kathryn Lee Shamburger, parents Charles Henry Shamburger, Jr. and Verna Lee Ackerman Shamburger
A true pillar of his community and a radiant soul, Sonny’s legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire all who were touched by his life. He will be remembered not only for his many accomplishments but for his generous heart and unwavering commitment to his family, faith, and friends.
A visitation will be held in Sonny’s honor on November 25, 2024, from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM at Brandon First Methodist Church, located at 205 Mary Ann Drive, Brandon, MS. The funeral service will follow at noon, leading into a graveside service at Old Brandon Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to gather and celebrate the life of this remarkable man.
