Charles Bailey “Coach” Sheppard, 77, passed away Saturday, May 19, 2018, at his home surrounded by his family. Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at Brandon Baptist Church from 2-5pm with services following at 5:00pm with Dr. Clarence Cooper officiating.
Born April 20, 1941 in Attala County, MS to Mary Evelyn and Walter Bailey Sheppard, Charles spent most of his life in Brandon graduating from Brandon High School in 1960. He received his B.S. from Mississippi College. He taught MS History & Civics and coached in Brandon school system until 1989. After retiring from teaching he served as County Supervisor in Rankin County for 12 years. Charles then became a business owner with his wife, Ann, Town Square Antique Mall.
He loved his students and enjoyed coaching in many different capacities including baseball, girls softball, and assisting in football. In teaching his students more than lessons in a book, he had a passion for working with the youth and was always involved in the community. During the late 60’s he ran the Brandon Youth Center which was located on the current site of Brandon Elementary. Mr. Sheppard was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a recipient of the Mississippi Conservationist Award. Charles was a charter member of Brandon Baptist Church and a member of Dr. Bernard Nail’s Sunday School class. Being a Granddad he loved going and watching all of his grandchildren play sports and other activities. All of them were loved very much by him.
Mr. Sheppard was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Ann Barker Sheppard. And, his parents Mary Evelyn and Walter Bailey Sheppard of Brandon, MS.
He is survived by his son, Scott Sheppard (Christy) of Brandon, MS; daughter, K’Ann Sheppard of Brandon, MS; sister, Jimmie Sheppard Wallace of Brandon, MS; five grandchildren, Bailey Sheppard Stephens, Colby Sheppard, Sunni Sheppard, Hayden Tucker, and Aubrey Tucker.
Honorary pallbearers are Colby Sheppard, Martin Blough, Robert Wallace, David King, Buck Foreman, Joe McCrany, Bobby Davis, and Vic Shivers.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials are made to Brandon Baptist Church Building Fund, 100 Brandon Baptist Drive Brandon, MS 39042.
