Christine H. “Chris” Brown, died Friday, November 15, 2013, at Rankin Medical Center surrounded by family and friends. Mrs. Brown had been a resident of Brandon for over 70 years. Visitation will be held at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS, from 3 until 5 p.m. on Sunday November 17 and Monday, November 18, 9 a.m. at Brandon First United Methodist church with the funeral service following at 10 a.m. Interment will be held at the Old Brandon Cemetery (Overby Street).

Chris was born in Centreville, MS, November 20, 1919, and was the eldest of four and last surviving daughter of James Bythel and Emma Hobgood. She spent a large portion of her childhood in Baton Rouge, LA, living with her paternal grandmother, whom she adored.

Chris was married for 53 years to Louis Brown, a Brandon native, who predeceased her in 1992.

She was the Director of Housekeeping, at what was then known as Rankin General Hospital for 15 years. During her recent stay there, one of her original employees came to visit her daily. She has been a member of the Brandon First United Methodist Church since she married and moved to Brandon.

Chris loved playing bridge with her many pals and belonged to several bridge clubs which were over 50 years old. For many years she was also in the Brandon Garden Club. She excelled in the understatement and never failed to bring a smile with her quick wit or a roll of the eyes!

She is preceded in death by her mother and father, her stepfather, S. D. “Doc” Latham, sisters, Flora Mae Mitchell, Doris Marie Ammons, Dorable Thames, and granddaughter Robin Camille Brown.

She is survived by her children: Robert L. Brown (Lucia), Breckenridge, CO, and Judith Carroll (Sam), Rye, NY; five grandchildren: Michelle Hopkins (Michael), Huntley, IL; Alexander Brown (Cyndi) Springfield, VA; Reed Carroll (Carroll Watson), New York City, NY; Kathleen Carroll, New York City, NY; Clark Carroll, Providence, RI; and five great grandchildren: Christopher and Alex Hopkins; Patrick and Megan Brown; and Amelia Carroll.
