Connie is a native of Mobile, Alabama having been reared in Leakesville, MS and a long time resident of Morton. She is a longtime member of First Baptist Church Morton and a member of Barbara Ott’s Sunday School Class. Connie worked for a number of years with the Mission Friends/G.A.’s and also served on the Youth committee. Connie enjoyed working with children and youth and she and husband, Toney served as chaperones for youth retreats and hosted many youth fellowships. Connie also served on the Church Hostess Committee and enjoyed working in the kitchen of the church for receptions, meals for bereaved families and VBS. She felt this was her calling to help in the kitchen when needed.
Connie served the City of Morton for thirty years, first as a general office clerk, then Deputy City Clerk from 1977 to 1989 and as City Clerk from 1989 to 2005. She served under four Mayors and numerous board members. Connie was faithful to her job and the citizens she served. After retirement Connie continued to serve the citizens when called upon in any way she could and always supported City of Morton activities. Connie was a member of the MS Clerks Association and served on committees of this association and secretary once. Connie obtained City Clerk’s Certification from the State and the Master Certification from the Clerks International Association. Connie served on the Board of Directors for the Morton Chamber of Commerce. She was Chairman of the Professional Women’s Luncheon for many years. This was a highlight each year for the working women of Morton. She was Chairman of the Keep Morton Beautiful Committee which won many awards for the city in its beautification efforts. She received the Chamber of Commerce Golden Shovel Award twice for her work on these committees.
Connie was a member of the Morton Lions Club having served as President and on various committees. She served at State Lion Girl’s Youth Camp for many years and also as a trustee of the Lions of MS Sight Foundation. During her husband Toney’s year as District Governor for the MS Lions, they traveled over the state and nation in service to Lionism. In 2008, the Morton Lions Club honored Connie with a Melvin Jones Fellow which is the highest honor a Lion can receive for humanitarian work with the Lions.
Connie’s family was always her heart and soul. She loved doing for all of them as long as possible. She loved cooking a big meal and feeding everyone and sending leftovers home with them. The grandchildren always wanted Maw Maw’s fried chicken tenders, spaghetti cheese and real creamed potatoes. This was always served even at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
She is survived by her husband of over 57 years, Toney Hollingshead, Sr. of Morton; two sons, Toney Hollingshead, Jr., and wife Kim of Brandon and Keith Hollingshead and wife Lesia of Flowood; five grandchildren, Janie Lynne Hollingshead (Rachel) of Atlanta, GA; Kristen H. Cherry (Will) of Flowood, Josh Hollingshead (Katie) of San Francisco, CA, Jordan Hollingshead and Jarred Hollingshead, both of Brandon; one precious great granddaughter, our Princess Camilla of Flowood. She was the Sunshine in Connie’s life these past two years and she treasured the time spent with her. We are also excited that we will be adding another great-grandchild to this family in October.
She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Nolan Ramsey and his daughter Tracy R. Day and family; brother and sister-in-law, Woodie and Barbara Head and sisters-in-law, Donna and Cindy Head all of Mobile, AL and families; the mother of my granddaughters, Terri Porter and our special granddaughter, Emma Grace; granddaughters by marriage, Katie Singleton and Kyle Singleton and a number of nieces and nephews.
