MORTON

Mr. Sonny Thornton, age 86, went home to be with his Savior after a brave and courageous fight with end stage renal disease. He died at Fresenius Dialysis Center in Forest on Thursday, November 18, 2010. Services were held at Ott & Lee Funeral home in Morton at 10am Monday, November 22, 2010 with burial in the Springfield Baptist Cemetery with Rev. Phil Smith and Rev. Robert Boyd officiating. Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Morton.

Mr. Thornton was a native of Decatur, MS and had lived most of his life in the Springfield Community. He was a member of Springfield Baptist Church, a mechanic for 52 years and ran a wrecker service. He retired when his beloved wife Thelma, whom he was married to for 51 years, became ill with Alzheimer’s. He was a Veteran of WW II and was trained as a medic and spent 2 ½ years on Oahu after the Pearl Harbor attack. A lot of his time was spent in medical supply building wooden containers to ship medical provisions. He left the Army with the rank of Staff Sgt. and he was a founding member of VFW Post #5586 and then proud to be a lifetime member. Curtis was never happier than when he broke ground with his tractor in the springtime. He was a lover of animals and he leaves behind his beloved horse, Pris, his dog, Shep and cat, Bones.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henton W. Thornton and Virginia Smith Thornton; wife, Thelma Winstead Thornton and sister, Charlotte Schlaifeir,

He is survived by his daughter, Susan M. Thornton of Morton, son, Henry W. Thornton of Houston, TX; sisters Millie McKay of Pelahatchie, Virginia Hand of Lawrence; brothers, Milton Thornton of Decatur and Paul Thornton of Lake and great nephew, Jay Roberts.

Pallbearers were James Dement, John B. Winstead, Jr., Gary Mitchell, Billy Joe cooper, Warren McKay and Rev. Phil Smith. Hand, Adam Brown, Jimmy Lane Cooper, Dr. Marcella Ruvinski, Dr. Howard Clark , Dr. John Paul Lee, Dr. Willial Lewis, Dr. Archie Howard, Daniel Yates, Johnny Cooper Avery, Bud Smith, Milton Smith, Truman Manning, Reginald Spiller, Robert Bliss, Rev. Marty Wilson, Myron Ware, Glenn Mahaggey, Ray Corben, Melvin Roland, Tommy Lee, Noble Lee, Richard Dana, Roger Westberry, Bradley Westberry, Patricia Westberry, Deneshia Mayes, Betty Anderson, Larry Roberts(deceased) and Dalton Winstead(deceased).
