Don Edd Woods, 61, died Wednesday, December 1, 2010, after a short but difficult battle with cancer. Affectionately known to most as “Uncle Don” and to his children and grandchildren as “Pops,” he was born on October 19, 1949 in Magee, MS. Don died surrounded by family members after returning home to Jackson, MS for Thanksgiving.

Don was a highly decorated Vietnam veteran, receiving the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Rifle Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal.

In life, Don retired after a successful career in the telecommunications industry, primarily with Hogan Systems in Dallas, TX. Don was an avid golfer, softball player, water skier, bowler (had a perfect 300 point game), outdoorsman, and loved by all. Don was full of humor and never met a stranger. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dent and Belle Woods, and grandparents, Jane and Luther Brown and Birdie and Wylie Woods.

Don is survived by daughter Carmen Vedder (Trent Elsea) and son Don Woods, Jr., of Denison, TX. Grandchildren include Katelynn Vedder, Dylan Vedder, Billy Woods, Lena Belle Woods and Luke Woods. Brothers include Benny Woods (Vee) of Pelahatchie, MS, Larry Woods (Jan) of Ft. Mill, SC, and Mark Woods of Jackson, MS. Sister is Margaret Collins (Wallace) of Jackson, MS. Don also has numerous nieces and nephews and other loved ones.

Pallbearers include Dylan Vedder, Mitch Collins, Tony Collins, Mike Warren, Jay Woods, Mark Woods, Jr., Neal Woods, and Bob Heath.

Visitation will be today, December 3, 2010 from 5 – 8 pm and Saturday, December 4, 2010 from 10 – 11 am at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS. Funeral services are 11 am Saturday, December 4, 2010 at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon. Interment will follow in Ross Cemetery in Cato, MS.
