Dorothy Robbins

Dorothy Winstead Robbins, age 94, passed away Sunday afternoon on December 31, 2017 at the Cedars Personal Care Home in SoSo, Mississippi.

She was surrounded by family, who prayed thanking God for the life she led and the benefits of love she was able to share with anyone and everyone touched by Dorothy Robbins wherever she went, as she gently slipped away to her next home in Heaven.

Nanny was born on St Patrick’s Day (3/17) in 1923 in La Feria, Texas, but her family was from the Burns Community near Brandon, MS.  She was back home to Mississippi while a teen and attended High School in Brandon.

During the WWII, she received a Civil Service Appointment to the War Price and Rationing Board in Brandon, where she met her future husband.  Dorothy also attended Jackson Commercial Business College.

She married Russell E. Robbins during WWII on November 18, 1944, and helped serve her part in different parts of the USA as he remained in the Reserves after the war.  They moved to Morton in 1948, and together opened the Russell’s Drugs pharmacy after Russell had become a pharmacist at Old Miss.

Dorothy and Russell became active in the community and their church, Morton United Methodist Church.  They had 4 children.

Dorothy was very active in all civic and church events and programs.  Dorothy served in the Morton Culture Club, the PTA, and the Methodist Women’s’ Group in different capacities, including as president of all three organizations.

Dorothy and Russell built a new home in Pulaski, just outside Morton, in the late 60s.  Dorothy always helped run the drugstore.  Dorothy has remained connected with some friends now for almost 70 years.

Her husband, Russell E. Robbins, preceded Dorothy Winstead Robbins in death.  She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara N. Robbins; son, Carl D. Robbins; and granddaughter, Krystine Harris.

Dorothy Robbins was survived by children, Rachel Robbins Harris (Stephen) of Sandersville, MS and Russell Ellis Robbins Jr. (Beth) of Brandon; 8 grandchildren, Andy Schubert, Christopher Schubert (Angie), Russell Ellis Robbins III, Andrew Herman Robbins, Jay A. Robbins, Lauren Robbins Weems (Chris), Jeremy A. Cook (Susan) and Robin Cook Powe (Chris); 10 great grandchildren, Cody, Caleb and Christian Schubert, Rylie Lucroy, Camden Weems, Emily and Reese Rayburn, David, Olivia and Joshua Powe and a host of friends.

The family extends a heartfelt thanks to the owners and caregivers at Cedars House in SoSo, Mississippi.  The quality of care was like part of the family.

Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Morton, Mississippi is in charge of the arrangements for her viewing time at the funeral home Friday night, January 5th, from 5pm-8pm, and the January 6th funeral services at the Morton United Methodist Church at 11a.m. as well as the Gravesite Service afterward at the Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetary.
