Dr. Byron Arthur “Pat” Clendinning, 89, of Brandon, Miss., died peacefully on Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at Baptist Hospital in Jackson from complications following hip repair surgery.
A native of McComb, Dr. Clendinning was born May 21, 1926, the first-born son of Byron Arthur and Leah Marguerite Davison Clendinning, and older brother of Stanley Fred Clendinning,
Having moved to Jackson, with his family, Pat was a graduate of Central High School in 1944. He worked as an announcer for a local radio station while earning his bachelor’s degree from Millsaps University. He served as Minister of Education at First Baptist Church of Jackson during the 1950’s and helped organize the Boy Scouts’ Order of the Arrow. He earned his master’s degree and Ed.D in Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas, where he met and subsequently married Monte Lee McMahan at First Baptist Church in Batesville, on July 21, 1957.
In the early years of their marriage, the Clendinnings served as Southern Baptist missionaries at the Baptist Seminary in Rüschlikon, Switzerland. While there they became parents of two sons before returning to the United States when Dr. Clendinning worked for the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Nashville, Tenn. The family later moved to Atlanta, Ga., where he served as Minister of Counseling at Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church.
In 1979, Dr. Clendinning joined the faculty of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, where he served until his retirement in 1995 as a professor of Religious Education and Family and Marriage Counseling. While there, the Clendinnings were members of Travis Ave. Baptist Church, faithfully teaching a young couples’ Sunday School class.
Among his accomplishments while at Southwestern, Pat helped develop The 24-Hour Counselor, ground-breaking audio materials for the Southern Baptist Convention. Serving as family and marriage counseling support to international missionaries into their retirement years, he and his wife traveled to 25 different countries on the continents of Asia, Africa, and Europe.
A tireless supporter of Southern Baptist missions and education work around the world, Dr. Clendinning continued to serve as a Sunday School teacher and missions committee member at First Baptist Church of Brandon, Miss. Although limited in his mobility in his later years and a resident of Peach Tree Village Assisted Living, he continued to greet members at the front door of the church as part of the Welcome Team.
Pat was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and wife. In addition to friends and extended family, he is survived by his sons and their wives, Byron David Clendinning and Kristin Clendinning of Charleston, W. Va., and John S.
