Dr. Charles David Lee, 80, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 23rd at home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 26th, at Forest Baptist Church. Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Forest is handling arrangements.
Dr. Lee was born on September 24th, 1930, in Forest, to former Mississippi Supreme Court Chief Justice Percy Mercer Lee and Hattie Mae Lee. He was one of eight children.
Dr. Lee loved sports and was an exceptional athlete. He played football, basketball and baseball at Mississippi College. At that time, MC was part of the Dixie Conference and The Clarion Ledger sportswriters dubbed him “Dixie Dave”. He was inducted into the MC Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982.
He finished MC in three years and was accepted at Tulane Medical School. He married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Billie Cates, after his first year of medical school.
After graduating from Tulane and completing his internship, he enlisted as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in 1956 and served two years in Okinawa, Japan.
Upon his return to Forest, he practiced 44 years of family medicine delivering more than 2,000 babies. A highlight of his practice was serving as the Forest High School football team doctor from 1958 – 2001.
Dr. Lee is survived by: his wife of 58 years, Billie Cates Lee, his son, David Lee, Jr. and wife Kathy of Forest, his daughter, Margy Lee Thaxton and husband Sandy of Crystal Springs. Grandchildren: Joni Lee Tillman and husband Jason of Forest and Jacob Lee, of Forest. Great grandchildren: Reese, Sam and Cali Tillman and Gage Lee, all of Forest. He was preceded in death by his son William (Bill) Cates Lee.
He is also survived by brothers: retired MS Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Noble Lee, Sr., Forest, Robert Edward Lee, Clinton, U.S. District Judge Tom S. Lee, Forest and sister Jane Lee Anderson, Montgomery, AL.
