Dr. Leonard W. Niewald, a retired Optometrist, passed away Sunday, July 12, 2015 at the V. A. Medical Center in Jackson. Visitation is 5-7 pm Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon and 10 am Thursday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Brandon. Services are Thursday at 11 am at the church with burial in Natchez Trace Cemetery in Madison.

Dr. Niewald was a native of Florida and a longtime resident of Missouri where he practiced Optometry before retirement and moving to Rankin County in 1995. While living in Washington, Missouri, he was a member of the Lions Club where he served as President several times. Dr. Leonard was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Brandon and was a World War II Army Veteran serving in Germany. He loved to work with stained glass and had the honor of making the windows at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and he also served as a volunteer for various functions in the area.

Survivors include his wife, Margarita Niewald; children and spouses, Phillip and Vicky Niewald, James and Lynn Niewald, Julie and James MacKay, Jeni and David Wiggins, Lynn and Tyan Carter, Neal Carter and adopted son, Michael Stauffer; 15 grandchildren and spouses, Michael and Kristina Niewald, Amber and Brandon Johnson, Kyle and Kayleigh Niewald, Emma Niewald, Melissa Niewald, Lisa Mackay and Matthew Ring, Andrew and Alisha MacKay, Rachel and Robert Hoschner, Patrick Wiggins, Eric Wiggins, Katie Wiggins, Casey and Andrew Tuttle, Lindsay and Chris Conwell, Marci and Josh McCoy and Wesley Carter; 8 great grandchildren, Ashlyn and Brooke Niewald, Aubrial, Isaiah and Hanson MacKay, Finley Conwell, Evelyn Hoschner and Tannalee McCoy ; brother and sister-in-law, Earl and Nancy Niewald; and sister Carolyn Scheer.

Dr. Niewald was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Niewald; son, Paul William Niewald; parents, Herman W. and Flora S. Niewald ; sister and brother-in-law, Laura and Ernest Elgert; brother, Donald Niewald; brother-in-law, Vernon Scheer and sister-in-law, Gloria Niewald.
