The Last Farmer, Henry Ray Nail, MD, passed away on November 13, 2013, at home. We’ve lost an exceptional husband, father, grandfather, sailor, author, physician, and friend.
Ray is survived by his wife, Ann Breeland, of 59 years of marriage; daughter, Trisha Laster, with her husband, Mike; and four sons: Chris and wife, Pam; Greg and wife, Cyndi; Ben and wife, Mickie; and Phil.
Ray’s grandchildren were the center of his life. They are Caleb Nail and wife, Sarah; Emily Lingle and husband, Nathan; Molly Nail; Jordan Laster; Kali Laster; Brianna Yeggy; Gabby Yeggy; Jason and Jennifer Armstrong; Brennan Lollar; Rachael Davis; Patrick Vinson; and great-granddaughter, Lylli.
Ray was born June 21, 1934, on a “small hill-and-hollow farm” in Carroll County, Mississippi. He received his early education in Grenada, Mississippi, a B.S. from Mississippi College in 1956, and his M.D. from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 1960. He served two years in the Navy.
Dr. Nail served as a staff physician in psychiatry at Mississippi State Hospital for thirty-seven years and was instrumental in advancing quality medical care. During much of this time he ran a small cattle farm and pursued his interests in genealogy research and in writing poetry. His poems have been published in various small magazines and in two anthologies published by Southern Poetry Association.
Services are 2 pm Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon with burial in Crestview Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 12 noon Saturday until the 2 pm service.
