Durwood “Mac” McGuffee, Sr., passed away on December 27, 2021. Visitation will be 12 Noon until 2:00 PM on Thursday, December 30, 2021, at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS. Graveside services will be 3:30 PM on Thursday, at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Newton, MS.
Mac was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a man who trusted in God even during the most challenging times of his life. He was born in Jacksonville, FL on October, 20 1944. He later moved to Newton Mississippi to attend high school and met Carolyn, the love of his life. They married in Newton on July 25, 1964. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After his service with the Marines, he attended and graduated from Clark College. He became an ordained minister in 1972. He began preaching at Bethel Baptist Church and other churches in Harmony, Quitman, Bond and eventually New Thought Ministries in Jackson. During his ministry, he also worked at finance companies in the cities where he preached. He eventually retired as a Regional Vice President of Republic Finance. He also had a passion for scuba diving. After becoming an experienced diver, he began to teach scuba diving to students and instructors. He ended his scuba career as the Southeast Training Director for the Professional Diving Instructor College. He enjoyed being in the ocean so much when he was younger that other instructors he taught gave him the nickname Waterbug.
Survivors include his daughter, Sherry M. Johnson and husband Don of Brandon, MS; son, Durwood E. McGuffee, Jr. and wife Leslie of Brandon, MS; grandchildren, Dylan McGuffee, Ashlan McGuffee and James Nichols(Lacey); great granddaughter, Grayson Rivers; sisters, Linda Osley of Ocean Springs, MS and Elaine Woods and husband Joel of Brandon, MS; brother, David E. McGuffee and wife Kathy of Gulfport, MS. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Walker McGuffee and his parents, Guy Hartwell McGuffee and Alice Loraine Hankins McGuffee.
