Mr. Fred Thomas “Dusty” Rhodes, age 72, a resident of Forest passed away on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Woodland Court in Newton. Visitation will be held 9:30am-11:00am Friday, February 15, 2013 at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Forest. Funeral service will be held 11am Friday at the Ott & Lee Chapel in Forest. Rev. Paul McDonald and Rev. John Cash will officiate at the services and Mrs. Norma Ruth Lee will be presenting the eulogy. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Forest.
Mr. Rhodes was born March 12, 1940 to J.C. and Mary Alma Rhodes, who has preceded him in death. He worked in the family appliance business for many years until it was sold. He then became a substitute teacher in the Forest Schools. In 2010 he received a twenty year Service Award from the Vo-Tech center. Dusty was beloved by his students. He was a Methodist and graduated from Forest High School and attended Hinds Community College. Dusty was a well-known Numismatist in Mississippi and surrounding states. He was a life member of the Mississippi Numismatic Association and of many clubs around the state. A new club member once referred to Dusty as “a legend in Mississippi numismatics.” He was the originator and editor of “Numisnet News” which kept collectors informed of meetings and shows in the south. He received numerous awards for his activities and exhibits and often presented programs for various civics clubs. He made many close friends in Mississippi and the surrounding states through his hobby. He was especially helpful to youngsters becoming involved in numismatics. Dusty was known to love a good joke and good food. He was a great cook and loved sharing, especially his Mexican cornbread and his salad dressing. He also loved animal and never forgot his deceased dogs, Pepper and Sugar, and cats, Silky, Purrcy and Rocky.
He met his wife, Beverly, in 1956 and asked her to marry him on the day they met. It was love at first sight. After their college days they married June 4, 1960. One of his happiest memories was the fiftieth anniversary celebration hosted by his family in 2010.
The family wishes to thank friends and medical personnel especially Dr. Bill Lewis, the employees at Woodland Court in Newton and Ethel Ford. Special thanks to Bobby Smith and the employees of Home Care Hospice.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J.C. and Mary Alma Rhodes and brother, John Turner Rhodes.
Survived by his wife, Beverly; sister, Mary Lynn Bagley (Freddie) and their children, Brett, Brooke and Bethany; sister, Margaret Rivers (Terry) and their children, Mark, Elizabeth and Rachel; nieces, Thelma Benson (Ron), Hope Simon (Brandon) and special niece, Susan Black (John).
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to the Newton Historical Commission, P.O. Box 523, Newton, MS 39345. This group is restoring the Civil War Era home of Mrs. Rhodes’ family. Remembrances may also be sent to Community Animal Rescue and Adoption, P.O. Box 231, Clinton, MS 39060-9910.
Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Mississippi Numismatic Association and John Lynn.
