Funeral services for Mrs. Elsie Stroud Cooksey were conducted on Wednesday December 3, 2014 at 11:00am from the Ott & Lee Chapel in Forest with the Bro. Larry Laird and Bro. Reggie Williams officiating. Interment followed in the Sharon Cemetery, North of Lake under the direction of Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Forest.
Visitation was held Tuesday December 2, 2014 from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home and on Wednesday from 10:00 A.M. – 10:45 A.M. prior to the funeral service.
Mrs. Cooksey, age 95, a resident of Newton, and a longtime resident of Lake, passed away Monday, December 1, 2014 at Bedford Care Center in Newton. A native of Scott County, and a lifetime resident of Lake, she was born November 15, 1919 to Richard L. Stroud, Sr., and Willis Hollingsworth Stroud. She was married to Olin H. Cooksey, a decorated World War II veteran (recipient of two purple hearts), who preceded her in death in 1991. She was a retired sales clerk at Fred’s in Forest. Favorite past times were crocheting, and reading. She was also a wonderful cook. Mrs. Cooksey was a devoted Christian, and a member of Pine Ridge Missionary Baptist Church at Lawrence. Mrs. Elsie loved the Lord and her family and friends. She will be missed by those who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents; two sons: James Olin Cooksey and Roger Carl Cooksey; one grandson: Keith G. Richardson; and three brothers: Infant Arville Stroud, Benton Stroud, and Amos Stroud.
Mrs. Elsie is survived by her two children: Richard L. (Irma) Cooksey and Judith A. Cooksey, both of Lake; one granddaughter: Kelli Delane (Ken) Colley and two great-granddaughters: Emma Grace and Anna Paige Colley, all of Canton; four sisters: Vondell Gibbs of Morton; Earline (Carlton) Walters of Louin; Bonnie Coleman of Vidalia, GA and Elizabeth (Tom) Shelton of Utica; and two brothers: Richard Lee (Tommie) Stroud, Jr. of Jackson and Glenn Stroud of Brandon; one sister-in-law: Mary Lee Cooksey Archie of Lake; numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Delbert Walton, Danny Stevens, Prentiss Bounds, Kenneth Rowell, Paul Cooksey, and Charles Thompson.
Honorary pallbearers were Jessie Stroud and David Kelly.
