Eric Lamar “Buddy” Applewhite Jr., 82, died Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at UMC in Jackson, MS after battling cancer 7 months. Services are Saturday, January 22 at 1:00 pm at Ott & Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Brandon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to French Camp Academy, First Baptist Church of Jackson or a charity of your choice.
Buddy was a longtime resident of Jackson, MS and then moved to Brandon in 1994. He attended French Camp Academy and after graduating, he served the U.S. Air Force and then attended Hinds Jr. College and Mississippi College. He retired from the Jackson Fire Department after 33 years and then proceeded to investigate arson with the State Fire Marshall office. During his years with the fire department, he successfully obtained his real estate brokers license. He was a member of the American Legion and completed 50 years of service as a Master Mason. He loved his church, First Baptist Church, Jackson MS and enjoyed very much his ministry as “ a greeter” because he was well known for never meeting a stranger. He also loved his Sunday school class and the Reflection choir. He loved spending time with family and friends and will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and his desire to serve others.
Survivors include his wife Martha of 55 years, his three children: Eric (Cindy) Applewhite of Florence, MS., Mike Applewhite of Jackson, MS., Tim (Janet) Applewhite of Prattville, AL. as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Elinor Naron of Pearl, MS and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eric Applewhite Sr. and Doris Applewhite.
The family expresses its heartfelt gratitude to all his cherished friends who supported and loved him during the many wonderful years of his life. We would also like to thank the staff at UMC for the care they provided during his time of sickness
