Clay is survived by his wife of 19 years, Renea Craft Herring and one daughter, Rebecca Elizabeth Herring both of the Forkville community near Morton; his mother, Bonita Beavers Herring of Morton, MS; three brothers, David (Susie) of Morton, MS; Darrell (Karen) of Woodstock, Georgia; and Brian (Kelly) of Madison, MS as well as a host of nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
Clay was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church of Forkville. He served in the United States Army for over 30 years and after retiring from service in Texas, he moved back to Mississippi to enjoy sharing time with his family. He was an Operation Desert Storm veteran having served with the Military Police unit activated out of Brandon and Clinton, MS. He later transferred to Texas where he served as NCO at Camp Mabry in Austin, Texas and also Camp Swift in Bastrop, Texas with the United States Army.
He loved the military and was very proud to serve his country and he served his time well and with much pride. He served valiantly and was very serious about the time and service he gave to his country through the military. He loved the flag and honored it greatly and spent much time after his retirement educating the young Americans about how the flag should be treated. He also spent many hours each week walking through the local cemeteries and placing flags on the graves of his fellow American soldiers and honoring them with the flag. He tried to participate in every available program he could to honor the veterans and share his loyal patriotism.
Clay also loved to camp and fish and spent lots of time with his family and friends enjoying the outdoors.
