Garry D. Smith, 65, a resident of Byram, went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday, February 15, 2015 at Baptist Hospital in Jackson, MS. Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 18, 2015 from 5 – 8 pm and from 9 – 10 am on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Richland, MS. Funeral Services will be held at 10 am Thursday from the Chapel of Ott & Lee Funeral Home with burial to follow in Kennedy Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Simpson County, MS.

Garry was a native of Richland, MS and was a 1968 graduate of Florence High School. Garry proudly served his country from 1970 – 1971 in the Army in Viet Nam. He later attended Police Academy and joined the Jackson Police Department in 1985 and retired from the force in 2012.

Garry was a very kind hearted man to all he met. Smitty, as he was affectionately known by friends, served his community as a baseball coach and co-founded MADD (Mother’s Against Drunk Drivers) in Mississippi. He was also active in the American Legion Post 112 helping other Veterans apply for benefits. He will be remembered as a man that was dedicated to his family, friends, and community. Garry chose to see the good in everything and everyone.

Survivors include his son, Wayne Smith of Byram; four grandchildren, Austin Smith of Jackson, Hannah Smith of Nashville, TN, Hunter and Ty Quick of Sallias, MS; one sister, Cindy Smith Corneliussen (Ralph) of Ft. Smith, Ark.; two brothers, Mark Smith (Joyce) and Ronnie Smith both of Richland, MS; three nieces, Tanya Hearn of Vicksburg, MS, Michelle Denham of Richland MS, and Alicia Brabham of Richland, MS; two nephews, Adam Cotton of Brandon, MS and Chad Smith of Richland, MS; two great nieces and four great nephews; and a special friend, Jean Grace of Richland, MS. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Wilson Smith and Willie B. Bratcher Smith; and a niece, Jennifer Cotton.
