Gay Sims Carothers died Tuesday, February 23, 2016, at Chadwick's Nursing Home in Jackson, MS. She was born November 15, 1936, in Oxford, MS. She was preceded in death by her parents, E. L. and Frances McVey of Water Valley, MS and her first husband William Sims of Brandon, MS.
Mrs. Carothers attended school in Water Valley before heading to Blue Mountain College. She was a graduate of Mississippi College and Ole Miss, where she received her Master’s Degree in Education. Gay retired in 1994 from the Rankin County School District after 36 years of teaching fourth and fifth grades at Pearl and Brandon Elementary Schools.
Gay enjoyed traveling abroad and gardening. She never met a flower (and some weeds too) that she didn’t love. Some of her fondest memories were seeing the cherry tree blossoms in Washington and traveling to Ireland with her friends. She was a member of the Rankin County Master Gardeners Club for 20 years.
Other interests included volunteering at Rankin Medical Center in the ICU unit for many years and being a member of the “Bubbly Babes” Chapter of the Brandon Red Hat Society. Also she participated in many church activities. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Water Valley and attended Liberty Baptist Church in Brandon.
Gay will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. She is survived by her husband Arnold Wayne (AW) Carothers of Water Valley; her daughter Lisa Wedgeworth and husband Jeff; her son Scott Sims and his fiancé Debbie Bates; and grandchildren Addison Wedgeworth, Brittany Sims, Jordan Sims, Jason Taylor Bates, and Jagger Bates, all of Brandon, MS.
Visitation will be 5-7pm Thursday, February 25, 2016 at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon. Services will be 2pm Friday in the chapel of the funeral home with visitation starting at 1pm prior. Interment will follow in Brandon Memorial Gardens.
