Georgia Swayze Smith, 66, passed away at home on February 10, 2014. Visitation will be 5-8pm Wednesday at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS. Services will be 12:30pm Thursday in the chapel of the funeral home with visitation starting at 11:30am prior to service. Interment will be in Crestview Memorial Gardens in Brandon, MS.
Mrs. Smith was born on May 19, 1947 to Henry Yandell Swayze and Catherine Butler Swayze and was raised in Benton, MS. She was a graduate of Mississippi State University and was in the Chi Omega Sorority, where she majored in Secondary Education and minored in Physical Education. She taught in the Madison Schools, Jackson Public Schools, and in Rich Township District, Cook County, IL. She also taught kindergarten at Crossgates Baptist Church, Brandon Academy which later became University Christian School and it was there that she received twice the Teacher of the Year, and inducted in to the Hall of Fame . Georgia taught various classes at Crossgates Baptist Church where she was a member.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister, Catherine Yandell Harris.
Survivors include her husband, Louie A. Smith of 43 years; daughter, Jill Smith of Canton, MS; son, Art Smith and wife Emily of Brandon, MS; granddaughter, Avery Leigh Smith and numerous nieces and nephews.
