Gladys “Marie” Smith
Brandon, MS

Gladys Marie Smith, 78, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on Friday, May 20, 2016. Visitation will be Saturday, May 21, 2016 from 5 until 8 pm and Sunday, May 22, 2016 from 1 pm
until the 2 pm Service in the Chapel at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS. Officiating will be Father Gerry Hurley. Burial will follow in the Rials Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery in Mendenhall, MS.

Marie was born to Baker and Lora McKenzie on January 5, 1938 in Indianola, MS. It was a time when the world was quiet and idle hands were sent to the fields to plow, pick or plant. Marie, however, preferred to be dancing. After a short stint in the Air Force, she married her soul mate, Lester Smith, at the age of 19. From that moment on they danced together, they loved, and they created a new generation , passing along wisdom, skills, and most of all, their unconditional love.

Marie is survived by her three children, Lester “Bo” Smith (Holly) of Brandon, MS, Shirley Ann Smith of Purvis, MS, and Edna Lee (Daniel) of Brandon, MS; two sisters, Vertie Mae Cooley of Louisiana, and Ann Haun of Houston, TX; two brothers, Johnny McKenzie (Frankie) of Prentis, MS and Joe McKenzie (Judy) of Starkville, MS; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Marie loved her family and helped raise not only her grandchildren, but her great-grandchildren as well.
When she wasn’t teaching life skills to her little ones, she was playing video games, and reading.

She is now in the presence of her husband, Lester; her grandson, Robby; and many loved ones who are, without doubt, grateful to see her smiling face again.
