Gradyne Berry Chadwick, 86, died peacefully in her sleep on December 29,
2010 at Leake County Memorial Hospital after a brief hospitalization.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 30
at Ott and Lee Funeral Home, 295 E 1st St, Forest, MS.   Funeral
services will be held in the Walnut Grove Baptist Church at 10 am, 104
Oak Street, with burial in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
Born September 15th, 1924, Gradyne was the daughter of the late Grady
and Helen Berry.  She grew up in Cisco Texas with her two brothers Bill
Berry, deceased, and Jim Berry.  Gradyne was preceded in death by her
husband of 61 years, Jeff Chadwick, who she met while working in El Paso
Texas supporting the war effort.  She married Capt. Jeff Chadwick on
February 14, 1944 and after the war they moved to Walnut Grove,
Mississippi, Jeff's hometown.  Gradyne and Jeff took over management of
the family hardware store in Walnut Grove.  They then worked as a team
for many years to develop their retail businesses.  By the time they
retired in 1993 they owned and managed five Chadwick's Variety Stores
located in central Mississippi. In the process their concern for others
resulted in the development of many friendships throughout the area.
Gradyne and Jeff had two children Pat and Mike Chadwick.  Pat worked for
Shell Oil for 35 years before retiring in Sarasota Florida and Mike took
over management of the variety stores and then moved into a position
with the Mississippi Development Authority where he is currently
working.  She is also survived by her daughter-in-laws Kat and Genie
Chadwick and her grandchildren Brian and Brad Chadwick.
The family would also like express special appreciation to Betty Minshew
who served as her caregiver and companion for many years, allowing her
to remain in her home to the end of her life.
In addition to being a successful businesswoman Gradyne was active in
club work and served as State President of the Thursday Club. Gradyne
and Jeff shared a love for travel in Europe and cruises with family
members.  Gradyne was a devoted member and supporter of the Walnut Grove
Baptist Church and it's mission work.  However, she will be most
remembered for her remarkable positive approach to life and her
willingness to provide quiet help for anyone in need.
