Harold, the third child of Peter and Loy Bennett was born in Forkville, MS on January 14th 1928. He grew up on a farm in the small community of Clifton. He would go to school until Spring planting and Fall harvest when he was needed on the farm. He would later meet the love of his life when he and some friends went to a basketball game. Liz Wallace, who was playing in the game, caught his eye. He asked his friend, “Who is that black haired girl? I gotta get to know her.” They were later married on April 12th, 1947 in Forest, MS and moved to Jackson where Harold went to work for Armstrong World Industries as a utility supervisor.
A few years later, Harold was drafted into the Air Force and served his country during the Korean Conflict. He and Liz were stationed at the former Sewart Air Force Base in Smyrna, Tennessee in 1955 when they were blessed with the birth of their only child, Norman. They would return to Jackson, MS later that same year where Harold would return to his job at Armstrong. He and Liz began to put down roots in Jackson as they began to raise their son. They both became active in Oak Forest Baptist Church with Harold serving as a deacon and Liz teaching Sunday School.
Harold loved to fish and work in his yard. He always had a large garden and his tomatoes were among the best. Harold and Liz met and became life-long friends with many of those they went to church with and worked with. They were devoted to one another and never made a decision without discussing it together. They were blessed to see their son grow up and marry and have three children of his own. Harold and Liz were devoted to their family. As Norman and his wife, Anita moved from state to state with Norman’s job, Harold and Liz would always make the drive to their home for the holidays to be with them and their grandchildren.
Harold would retire from Armstrong in 1987 after working there for forty years, allowing him and Liz to travel together, often to Pigeon Forge, TN and up through Virginia to visit friends. Harold and Liz would eventually move from Jackson to Brandon in 1992 to be down the street from his son and daughter in law and the grandchildren. Harold and Liz joined First Baptist Church in Brandon and met and made many friends there. Harold continued his love of fishing and began work in the front and back yard at the new house in Brandon, planting many beautiful flowers and trees. He planted his large garden and continue to grow his tomatoes. Harold was blessed to see the marriages of all of his grandchildren and the birth of all five of his great grandchildren. Sunday lunch was a mainstay at Harold and Liz’s house with family all around where he and Liz would talk about growing up in Clifton. Harold took great care of Liz as her health began to deteriorate. She passed away on January 27th, 2012. Harold continued to go to church, work in his garden and see friends and family until his own health began to deteriorate. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was the rock of this family and will be missed beyond words. He is preceded in death by his wife, Liz Bennett, his brother L. J. Bennett and his great grandson, Brandon Bennett.
He is survived by his sister, Jean Grogan of Madison, his son and daughter in law, Norman and Anita Bennett of Brandon, his grandchildren and their spouses, Tommy and Heather Bennett, Brant and Katie Bennett and Allison and Wade Powers, all of Brandon and his four great grandchildren, Emily, Mina, Vaden and Harlow.
