Dr. Harold Henderson

Harold McDonald Henderson, MD, 61, of Pearl, passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at UMMC after a courageous battle with leukemia.  He was the beloved husband of Christy (Norwood) Henderson and father of Jonathan Lee Henderson.
Harold was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi on April 6, 1956, and grew up in Iberia, Missouri and the New Orleans area.   He was the son of the late Robert L. Henderson, Sr. and the late Eileen (McDonald) Henderson.  He graduated with honors from West Jefferson High School in 1974, from Tulane University in New Orleans in 1979 and from LSU Medical School in 1984.   He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Alabama, where he met the person who he “loved more than anything else in the world,” his future wife and companion for 31 years, Christy Norwood.    Harold completed his fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Cincinnati and joined the faculty of the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1991.  He remained there for the rest of his career.  An expert in the treatment of patients with HIV, Harold was a talented teacher and trained many new doctors to care for patients with infectious diseases. He also was the co-founder of RideABILITY Therapeutic Riding Center in Brandon, where he enjoyed working with special needs children learning to ride horses and maintaining the farm facilities.
He is also survived by his brother, Robert L. Henderson, Jr (wife, Cathy); sister, Mary Sue Henderson, mother-in-law, Rosie Huffman Norwood and brother-in-law, Donald Wayne Norwood; nieces Kathryn Lynn Henderson, Jennifer Norwood Seguin (husband, Kristopher), Tia Henderson Ho (husband, Elan); nephews Jeffrey Michael Henderson (wife, Melanie), Jason Lee Norwood, David Anderson Walker and Marshal McDonald Walker; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins whom he loved.  He was preceded in death by his sister, Anne Joyce Henderson.
Visitation will be at Ott and Lee Funeral Home, 1360 W. Government St. Brandon, Mississippi on Saturday, July 8, 4:00 -7:00 p.m., and Sunday, July 9, 12:00 – 2:00 p.m.  A funeral service will be held Sunday, July 9, 2:00 p.m. at Ott and Lee Funeral Home, followed by interment in Crestview Memorial Gardens, 1106 Star Road, Brandon, Mississippi. Friends and family are invited to attend.
Memorial donations can be made in lieu of flowers to RideABILITY Therapeutic Riding Center, 117 RideABILITY Lane, Brandon, MS, 39042.
