Harry LaDonn Powell, age 77, passed from this life on May 21, 2023 in Brookhaven, MS.
Don was born on November 5, 1945, in Jackson, Mississippi. He grew up in Pearl as the middle child of 5 children. After graduating from Pearl High School, Don attended Mississippi State University where he earned degrees in both Forestry and Business Administration. He was also a member of the track team as a long jumper. Shortly after college, Don joined the army and proudly served in Korea. He later worked in finance and in military civil service. Don spent two decades in the Army Reserve. His retirement followed years of work with the Veterans Administration.
Don enjoyed watching sports, especially college basketball. He was an avid reader and loved books on war history. Don spent his last years in Bentonia where he enjoyed watching old movies, gardening, and growing rose bushes. He was a member of Parkview Church in Yazoo City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dessa Hobson Powell and Wiley T. Powell; sister, Patsy Neese; brothers Aulcie Ferguson and Bobby Powell. Don is survived by his daughters, Stephanie Powell Tatum (Erik), and Jenni Powell Ivy (Ty); grandchildren Rose Ivy, Audrey Ivy, Adalyn Tatum, and Owen Tatum; and great-granddaughter Athena Ivy. Other surviving family members include the mother of his children, Sandra Powell Robinson; sister, Sandra Price, and numerous nieces and nephews. Don is also survived by his beloved friend, Mary Ann Bradshaw and her family.
We want to thank the staff at Diversicare of Brookhaven for their compassionate care. Private services will be held at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Newton at a later date.
