Harvey Edward Ellingburg, Sr., 77 retired garage and body shop business owner, went to rest in his eternal home on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at his residence after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Visitation is 5-8 pm Saturday at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon. Services are 3 pm Sunday, May 9, 2010 at the funeral home with burial in New Brandon Cemetery on Star Road in Brandon. Longtime friend, Dr. J. T. Laird, and grandson, Rev. Dennis Ellingburg will officiate. Pallbearers will be Jack Shows, Justin Shows, Waters Hicks, Derek Michael, Don Wheeler and Ray Luby.
Harvey was born on February 24, 1933, in Kilmichael, MS to the late David and Katie Ellingburg. He was rich in life with love and appreciation for people, nature and sports. Harvey exercised his love for these throughout his lifetime. He touched many people as a youth league football coach and remained instrumental in the lives he touched. In his own youth, he played football for Newton High and Jones Jr. College and reveled in the fact that his beloved team “Faced the Giants” and beat Meridian in his 1951 school year. Harvey was also a drill instructor in the army and a member of Andrew Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years and the love of his life, Jeanette; 6 children, Deborah Hicks (Dr. Merrill Hicks) of Thomasville, GA, Janet Michael (Ron) of Knoxville, TN, Eddie Ellingburg (Terri) of Morton, Joe Ellingburg (Sammie) of Madison, Kathryn Morriss (Ted) of Brandon and Chip Andrews (Debbie) of Montgomery, AL; uncle, Robert Salley of Florence; aunt, Allie Pettigrew of Madison; 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of MS or your favorite charity.
