Hazel Winters Humphreys

Hazel was a wonderful woman that was loved, is missed, and will always be unforgettable.  Our “Grandma” as she liked to be called by her grandchildren, “GG” as she liked to be called by her great grandchildren, “Baby” as she was called by my Papa Gale when she was being nice to him, was an amazing wife, mom, sister, grandma, and was the baker of the most amazing biscuits that you have ever eaten.  She would roll them with her little hands and tried her best to teach me how to roll them too which I never mastered by the way.

Mrs. Hazel Lisa Winters Humphreys, age 91, of Pearl, Mississippi, previously of Baden, Missouri, left her Earthly home to be with her Heavenly Father Saturday, May 4, 2019, at Lakeland Nursing and Rehab in Jackson, Mississippi.

She was born May 8, 1927, in Drew, Mississippi in Sunflower County.  She was the oldest daughter of the late Joseph Sid Winters and Nancy Katherine Smith Winters.  She was raised in love and cotton, and she was taught many lessons that she told stories about through the years.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband and stealer of the covers Gale Humphreys; two sons, William Vance Wilson and Billy Derwin Wilson who were the apples of her eye; two brothers, Everett Leon Winters and Joe Sid Winters who she is playing dominoes in Heaven with right now; and one sister, Dixie Ruth Mills who was her sidekick since birth and she was lost without from the time her “Sissy” left her, and I have no doubt that wherever one of these Angels are the other is close behind in Heaven; she was also preceded in death by Evelene Washington, Retha Keith, and Gail Myers who were her stepdaughers but she adored.

She was a devout Mormon and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in St. Louis, Missouri.  She was a retired nurse from Lutheran Altenheim in St. Louis.  She enjoyed westerns, puzzles, dominoes, playing cards, country and gospel music, and laughing with her family the most.

Hazel is survived by one son Linnard Wilson of Gulfport, Mississippi who in her eyes could never do anything wrong and one daughter Barb Runnels (Pat) of Pearl, Mississippi who took care of her religiously every day and was her “Barbie.”  She is also survived by Faye Garcia (Joe) of Madison, Illinois, Garland Humphreys (Susie) of Greenville, Mississippi, and Barbara Grammer (Joe) of Leland, Mississippi who she didn’t birth, but loved them like she did.  She has several grandchildren; James Vance Wilson of St. Louis, Missouri, Leonard Wilson (Laura) of Lake Ozark, Missouri, Joseph Wilson of Osage Beach, Missouri, Crystal Wilson of Osage Beach, Missouri, Angela Wilson of O’Fallon, Missouri, Billy Wilson of St. Peters, Missouri, Ellis Wilson of Duluth, Minnesota, Vickie McGlawn (DJ) of Brandon, Mississippi, Peggy Lepard of Kosciusko, Mississippi, Patricia Parker (Perry) of Kosciusko, Mississippi, Kerri Vaught (Chris) of Jackson, Mississippi, and David Runnels (Lindsay) of Brandon, Mississippi. She leaves behind 34 great grandchildren. She also leaves many other family members and friends who will miss her dearly. There was a streak of innocent mischief in Hazel from time to time and we loved her every minute for it.  I am sure in all of us there will come moments of the same thing that will remind us or others of her.   As long as we all live Hazel will live on too.
