MORTON
Hazel Irene Smith Walter of Morton passed away Thursday, May 20, 2010 at the Mississippi Care Center of Morton. She was 97.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 26 from 4-8 p.m. at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Morton. Graveside services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, May 27 at Morton Memorial Gardens, followed by the memorial service at 11 a.m. at Morton United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Walter was born Sept. 8, 1912 to Elizabeth Mullenix Smith and William Ira Smith in the Salem community near Kossuth, MS. She attended elementary school at Jacinto, MS, graduated from high school at Alcorn County AHS in Kossuth, and later graduated from East Central Jr. College in Decatur.
In 1937 she and David Earl Walter,Sr. Morton native, were married in Washington, D.C. There they lived for a few years, then in Kossuth and Mobile, AL for short times before settling permanently in Mr. Walter's home community of Morton.
Mrs. Walter was preceded in death by her husband David Earl Walter, Sr. of Morton who died in 1996. Survivors include her two children, Elizabeth (Walter) Willcockson of Denver, CO, David Earl Walter, Jr. of
Milan, TN, grandchildren Barbara A. (Willcockson) Archer, Brett L. Willcockson, both of Denver, CO. Also, great grandchildren Jake D. Willcockson and Skyler F. Willcockson, the son and daughter of Brett and Marisa (Hubert) Willcockson of Denver. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews from both the Smith and Walter clans.
Her brothers and sisters were Floy, William Kenneth, Herbert Harley, Giffie Lee, Nora Gladys, Maurice Winfred and Charles Edwin. Only Charles E. Smith (Martha Smith) of Houston, MS survives.
Family and church were very important to Mrs. Walter who was an active member of Morton United Methodist Church. For 25 or more years Mrs. Walter worked for various principals at Morton High School, retiring in 1978. The friendships from church and school enriched her life to the end.
The family would like to thank the several caregivers they employed who enabled Mrs. Walter to live at home for five of her last six years. Their attentive care and friendship were most appreciated. Her last year was spent at the Mississippi Care Center in Morton where she enjoyed the bustling activity and thrived under the competent care of the staff.
