Hilton Dewitt Hawkins, age 80, a resident of Raleigh died at his residence after a short battle with lung cancer, Thursday, February 25, 2016.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11am Saturday, February 27, 2016 from the Burns United Methodist Church , with interment in the Providence Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5pm to 7pm Friday, February 26, 2016 at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Forest. The Rev. Douglas “ B.B.” Watson will officiate.
Mr. Hawkins was born in Smith County on January 3, 1936. He was raised in the Baptist church but later joined the Providence Lutheran Church. He was a Master Mason for 50 years and a member of International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and was employed with the Asbestos Workers Local 114-Jackson, MS for 35 years. He served 4 years in the United States Navy and 2 years in the Mississippi National Guard. Mr. Hawkins enjoyed the outdoors including hunting, fishing, wood carving and was known for “fixing” things. If something was broke, he could get it fixed. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; James Hilton “Hick” Hawkins and Phebe Vinzant Hawkins, also his son; Dewayne Dewitt Hawkins.
Survivors include his wife of almost 60 years, LuDora Hallman Hawkins of Burns, four sons; George Hilton Hawkins (Cindy) of Burns, James Alvin Hawkins of Raleigh, Robert Allen Hawkins of Lorena and Benjamin Lewis Hawkins of Burns, three sisters; Elaine Sessums (Billy) of Newton, Pauline Harris of Raleigh and Claudine Heard of Brandon. He also leaves a legacy of six grandchildren; April Yeager, Josh Hawkins (Brittany), Adam Hawkins, Austin Hawkins, Craig Hawkins , Rachel Hope Hawkins and one great-grandchild; Elizabeth Yeager. Mr. Hawkins was also survived by several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Pallbearers are Adam Hawkins, Austin Hawkins, Josh Hawkins, Robert Hallman, Mitch Hallman and Keith Wedgeworth.
