Alonzo Hudson Williams, 97, passed from this life to the next on September 11, 2012. Visitation will be Friday, September 14, 2012 starting at 9am until the 11am service in the chapel of Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon. Interment will follow in Cedarlawn Cemetery in Jackson.
He is now safe in the arms of Jesus where there are no fears or darkness. He was the son of Bill Williams and Mary Jane McAlpin Williams. He grew up in Flora, MS as one of eight children. He was married to Eva Jewel Donald Williams who preceded him in death. He always referred to her as his “Jewel”. His accomplishments in this world were many. A man of integrity and honesty, he came to Jackson as a young man of 20.
He worked at two jobs before becoming a Jackson Policeman for more than 20 years retiring as Assistant Chief of Police. He was given the task of setting up the first organized training program for the city policemen by Mayor Allen C. Thompson. He just did that. Planned the training program and was instrumental in designing and bringing to fruition the training building which is still in use today. During his career he served as President of the Miss Law Enforcement Officers Association and the Mississippi-Tennessee Law Enforcement Officers Association. After retirement from the city, he worked for the Criminal Justice Planning Commission, a state agency which used grant money to supply small police departments with necessary equipment they would not ordinarily be able to afford. He was a Sunday School Teacher for many years at Wells Memorial Methodist Church. He was one of the founding members at Asbury and served as Lay Leader.
He is survived by his daughter, Barbara, her husband James Harris; granddaughters, Jennifer Harris and Kimberly Berry along with Kimberly’s husband, Jeremy Berry.
We will miss him greatly. Serving God way his way of life. Prayer was vital to him as air. We would like to thank everyone who has called, his Wells Group friends, and Hospice Ministries for their faithfulness during these last days. May God be with you always.
