Ida B. Lewis Milner, 82, died at St. Dominic’s Hospital in Jackson, MS, on Friday, August 1, 2014. Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2014, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS, with a service following in the funeral home chapel. A private graveside service will take place at Clifton Baptist Cemetery in rural Scott County, MS. Rev. Earl Clark will officiate.
She was born on March 30, 1932, in Ludlow, MS, to John W., Jr., and Ellie Trest Lewis. She graduated from Ludlow High School and studied music, leading to a long career of teaching piano to scores of young people over a 30-year period.
Encompassing all that Ida did in her life was her staunch loyalty and devotion to her beloved husband, Edward, her children, and her friends. Second to that was her intense love of all things competitive, evidenced by her passion for basketball, baseball, football, tennis, golf, bowling, fishing, and even cooking. She was a member of Alta Woods Baptist Church in Jackson.
Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will greatly miss her humor, her cooking, and her selfless sacrifices made on their behalf. From her, they have learned laughter, perseverance, and courage. They acknowledge sadly, but joyfully, her need to fly the constraints of this earth and walk the heavenly fields with her husband and other loved ones, possibly finally getting the chance to sit on the banks and catch “the big one.”
Affectionately known by everyone as “Mammy,” she is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, William Edward Milner, and her three brothers, Billy, Raymond, and Paul Lewis. She is survived by her son, John Edward Milner, and his wife, Pam, of Brandon, MS; her daughter, Jan Milner Collier, and her husband, Bill, of Decatur, GA; her four grandchildren: Amanda Milner Eaton, of Madison, MS; Adam Edward Milner and his wife, Carlin, of Brandon, MS; Stuart Carlisle Collier, of Decatur, GA; and William Payton Collier of Decatur, GA; and her five great-grandchildren: Banks Allan Eaton, Samuel Edward Milner, Hayes Thomas Eaton, Jack Williams Milner, and Morgan Marie Milner.
Ida possessed an independent spirit and lived life to the fullest, without complaining. She loved and was loved by many friends and would consider it proper to mention Lisa and Pede Healey, and her physical therapist, Melanie, all of whom blessed her life immeasurably.
