James Roy Boggan, 86, a retired FmHA District Director, died Sunday, November 3, 2013 at his home in Brandon, MS. Visitation is Wednesday, November 6, 2013 from 4 – 6 pm and again Thursday, November 7, 2013 from 1 pm until the 2 pm Chapel Service at Ott & Lee Funeral Home, Brandon, MS. Burial will follow in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Mendenhall, MS.
Jim was born in Pinola, MS on October 18, 1927. He graduated from Pinola High School early and attended Mississippi State University. His education was interrupted by his volunteering for the U. S. Navy in World War II. Upon his return from service, he graduated from MSU in 1949. He was employed by the Farmers Home Administration for 35 years which was his lifetime dream, because his father, Barry, worked for Rehab, Farm Security Administration and FmHA. Jim was awarded the USDA Superior Service Award for Outstanding Service. He accepted this award, on behalf of employees in Washington County with whom he was privileged to work, from Vice-President Hubert Humphrey, Speaker for the occasion. Jim was a graduate of the Agriculture Policy Institute at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1984, he retired from the only job he had ever held, at the age of 56.
Jim was a longtime Baptist and was a member of Pinelake Church. He was a NAMB volunteer serving in Helen, GA and Dauphin Island Resort Ministry. Recently, he served as lay minister at Heritage House in Castlewoods. Jim was active in Association work where he had the pleasure of serving with outstanding associational directors. He served as Sunday School Teacher, Deacon and president of the Baptist Men. He shared his faith wherever he worked and lived. He ministered at nursing homes for many years, presently serving with his wife, Venita in Congregational Care ministries at Pinelake Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Berry and Lona Bell Boggan; his four sisters, Edna Boggan Griffith, Miriam Welch, Bobbye Boggan Roberts, and Charlene Boggan Gibson; and a step-son, Jack Allen.
Survivors include his wife, Venita Southern Boggan of Brandon; one brother, Joe Boggan(Sue) of Yazoo City, MS; three step-sons, Lance Allen (Donna) of Madison, Terry Allen of Malvern, ARK, Andy Allen (Joyce) of Las Vegas, NV.; seven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews; and step-daughter in law, Suellyn Allen of Youngville, LA.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Jim’s Caregivers, Karen Carr, Vickie Taylor, Michelle Ross-Trostle, and Korie Wilson who did such an excellent job caring for him the last few weeks of his life.
