James Gilbert McCown, 79, a resident of Brandon, MS went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 19, 2016, at his home, with his loving family gathered around him. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 22, 2016 from 1 until 3 pm at Crossgates United Methodist Church in Brandon. Funeral Services will begin at 3 pm at Crossgates United Methodist Church. Burial will be Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at 1 pm in the Batesville Magnolia Cemetery in Batesville, MS. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS.
James Gilbert McCown was born on October 21, 1937 in Batesville, Mississippi, where he lived the early part of his life. He graduated from Batesville High School in 1955, attended Northwest Junior College and then on June 15, 1957 he married Martha Virginia White. He served in various capacities of leadership in the community and the Church. He was a member of the Batesville Volunteer Fire Department, active in the Batesville Junior Chamber of Commerce, a Deacon at First Baptist Church, and elected an Alderman for the City of Batesville for four years.
In 1978 he began working as the Chief of Permit for the Alcoholic Beverage Control with the State Tax Commission until his retirement in 2000. After moving to Brandon, Mississippi, Gilbert and Martha joined Crossgates United Methodist Church where he was a member until his death.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Arthur McCown and Louise Ferrell McCown. He is survived by his loving wife, Martha White McCown of Brandon; his children, Debra (Debbie) McCown McDonald (Matt) of Crofton, Maryland, Elizabeth (Beth) Dare McCown Hipps of Madison, and James (Jim) Gilbert McCown, Jr. of Hattiesburg, MS; grandchildren, Ashley Marie McDonald Griffin (Ben) of Crofton, Maryland, James Paul McDonald (Jenn) of Crofton, Maryland, and Joseph Conner Hipps of Madison, MS; his brother, William (Billy) Bates McCown of Kosciusko, MS; nephews, Shane McCown and Tim McCown both of Kosciusko, MS, and Chris White of Plano, Texas; a niece, Kate Adams of Ft. Myers, FL; a sister in law, Vicki White of Madison, MS; and a brother in law, Earl White of Foley, AL; nine great nephews and two great nieces.
