James Derrell Roberts, 79, passed away Friday, Feb. 15, 2013 at the Scott Regional Hospital in Morton, MS. Funeral Services will be held at 2pm. Sun. Feb. 17, 2013 at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS with visitation prior to the services from 11am.-1:45pm. at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 3:30pm. Sun. in the Carr Cemetery in Smith County, MS.
Mr. Roberts was born in Pineville, MS. He attended the Mississippi State University for two years and then joined the U.S. Air Force where he traveled extensively for six years. He was last stationed at Vanderburg AFB in California where he was one of twenty six men selected to fire the first Atlas Missile in the guidance division. After his duty in the Air Force, Mr. Roberts returned home to Pineville where he and his family owned and operated a poultry business for over 20 years.
Mr. Roberts was also very active in the American Legion and helped establish the American Legion Post in Pineville. He was elected state commander in 1977 and was on several national committees within the American Legion. Prior to his retirement Mr. Roberts and his brother Randolph Roberts owned an oil field service company GTS in Texas and Mississippi. He retired in the mid 1990’s and has been a resident of Brandon, MS since 1981.
Mr. Roberts is survived by his wife, Barbara Roberts of Brandon, MS; his daughter, Lori Walraven and her husband Ken of Newnan, GA; his son, Bill Roberts and his wife Michelle of Brandon, MS and eight grandchildren.
