James Varner

October 14, 1934 — June 3, 2015

James Earl Varner, our loving father, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at the age of 80, surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Fri. June 5, 2015 from 5pm-8pm at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS. Funeral Services are 11am Sat. June 6, 2015 at the Ott & Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Brandon, MS with burial to follow in the Lakewood Memorial Park Cemetery in Jackson, MS.

James was born in Magee, MS on Oct. 14, 1934. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at 17 years old and served for 4 years. He married Laverne Rowlen in 1956 and had three children, Vicki, Staci, and Jim. They moved to Jackson, MS in 1960 where he was employed at the Jackson Fire Department for 20 years. He opened his business, Varner TV and Appliance in 1975 until his retirement in 2007. During these years, James and Varner TV and Appliance became a fixture in South Jackson, known to many far and wide. For 32 years, friends and family gathered there to visit, discuss politics or football, as well as play a game of checkers. All who entered the doors met a friend in James. Varner TV and Appliance was more than a business, it was a haven.

He was a member of Brandon Baptist Church in Brandon, MS. He loved football, especially his Ole Miss Rebels, golf, and couldn’t wait for spring to plant his tomatoes and mow his yard. He was a wonderful mentor to many young people and was passionate about our country and military. He enjoyed sharing his retirement life with his love and companion of 9 years, Beverly, and together they shared a wonderful life.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Laverne; his parents, Elbert and Alno Varner; in-laws, John and Bennie Mae Rowlen; brothers, Vernon and Howard Varner, and sisters-in-law, Helen Gallagher, and Mary Varner.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Little Varner; daughters, Vicki Neron and Staci Merchant (Tom); son, Jim Varner (Annette); 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Susan Fivecoat (Royce), and Royce Varner, and step-son, Scott Culberson (Denna).
