James (Jim) Cooper Barnes, 90, passed away Tues. April 29, 2014 at his home. Visitation will be held on Thurs. May 1, 2014 from 5pm-8pm at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Forest, MS. Funeral Services will be held at 11am Fri. May 2, 2014 at the Homewood United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
Jim was born April 29, 1924 in Homewood, MS to the late Erie and William Barnes. He lived in the Homewood/Forest area all of his life and settled in Homewood where he raised his family. Jim graduated from Homewood High School, served in the US Marines during World War II, returned from the war, married and began a career in the forestry business. This career took him into the service with the US Forestry Service upon which he retired. After retirement from the forest service he ventured in a consultant business and worked for several years in the private sector.
Jim was a member of the Homewood United Methodist Church where he served in various leadership roles. Jim was an active member of South Union Masonic Lodge #193 and was elected Grand Master of Free & Accepted Masons of Mississippi in 1981. Jim was also a charter member of East Mississippi Greys Camp #1666, Sons of Confederate Veterans.
He is survived by his wife LaRue Dukes Barnes; daughter, Medero Carr (Hugh) of Brandon, MS; son, Jeff Barnes (Denise) of Homewood, MS; three grandchildren, Margo West (Ray) of Florence, Jay Carr of Berlin, Germany, and Brian Barnes (Jennifer) of Brandon, MS; four great grandchildren, Raegan and Abby West and Hagen and Emma Barnes; sister, Nell Harrison of Newton, MS; a niece and several nephews. Jim is also preceded in death by a sister, Miriam Kenney and two brothers, Billy and Bob Barnes.
The family wishes to personally thank his physicians and home health care personnel.
