Mr. James W. Simmons, age 97, a resident of Morton passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at MS. State Veterans Home in Kosciusko. Visitation was held 5:30-8 pm Sunday, October 12, 2014 at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Morton. Funeral service was held 2 pm Monday, October 13, 2014 at Ott & Lee Chapel in Morton with burial in Morton Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Bro. Earl Clark officiated the services. Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Ott & Lee Funeral home in Morton.

Mr. Simmons was born in Scott County in 1916. He was proud to have served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved deer hunting and fishing. Mr. Simmons loved to serve the public and also the Christmas holidays when he would dress up as Santa Claus at his place of business, Western Auto, which he opened in 1948.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew G. Simmons and Ethel Bustin Simmons; wife, Bernice Usry Simmons; sisters, Raydelle Ellis, Ethel Upton and Aliene Simmons; brothers, Ewart, Ernest and S.B. Simmons.

He is survived by his daughter, Betty Grant (Richard); 2 grandchildren, Gaye Crotwell (Steve), Richie Grant (Randy Leigh); 4 great grandchildren, Kaley and Colby Crotwell and Jordan and Jase Grant; a special sister in law, Linda Simmons; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Pallbearers were David Bradshaw, Sonny Garland, Ken Gordon, Joe Kelly, Colby Crotwell and Jase Grant. Honorary pallbearers were Davis Holmes and Henry Alford.

Memorials may be made in his honor to the First Baptist Church of Morton Building Fund or Sharon Primitive Baptist Church in Lake.
