Mrs. McLaurin was born April 27, 1929, on the campus of what is now Mississippi State University, the youngest and last survivor of four children of Hal Fox, a math professor, and Katie Campbell Fox, a homemaker. Following a stroke suffered by her father in 1937 which left him unable to teach, the family moved to Jackson in 1942, where her mother found employment at the Veterans Administration. She graduated from Central High School in 1945 and from Millsaps College in 1948 with a B. A. in history where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority.
On August 20, 1951, she met her future husband, John C. McLaurin, of Brandon, on a “blind date”, and following a whirlwind courtship they married in Jackson on December 15, 1951. After their marriage they made their home in Brandon where she resided for the rest of her life.
Her husband practiced law in Brandon while she maintained a home and raised their three sons, John, Jr., Sidney and Anse. A member of Galloway United Methodist Church at the time of her marriage, she subsequently joined Brandon First United Methodist Church where she maintained her membership until her death and actively participated in numerous programs and societies.
She enjoyed many varied civic activities but her favorite was her garden club work. Shortly after her marriage, the Brandon Garden Club was organized and federated and she became a charter member, being the only remaining active charter member at the time of her death. She served in many local, state and national offices culminating in her tenure as State of Mississippi Garden Club President from 1971 to 1973. Until very recently she continued to attend all state and local meeting and activities. The Brandon Garden Club recognized her achievements in 2015 by establishing a scholarship at Hinds Community College for deserving students in her honor. A lifelong horticulturist, her favorite hobby was growing roses which she delivered to her many friends for special occasions in their lives.
She was a member of the Rebecca Cravat Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution and she served for many years as a docent at the Mississippi Governors’ Mansion. She was a member of and regularly attended the Cosmos Club, Le Dejeuner Luncheon Club, Town Club and Wise Owls, where she enjoyed her fond associations with many cherished friends.
She and her husband travelled far and wide and eagerly anticipated exploring new venues both nationally and internationally. They especially loved journeying with their grandchildren after they arrived and were always eagerly planning new adventures.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her three older siblings, Hal Fox, Jr., Judith Fox Phillips and Joan Fox Folwell and their respective spouses, Marie, Bob and Harry; her husband in 2004, and her daughter-in-law Carol Noel McLaurin in 2010.
She is survived by her three sons, John Campbell McLaurin, Jr., Sidney Lee McLaurin and his wife Trudy Sigmon McLaurin and Anselm Joseph McLaurin and his wife Tammy Harris McLaurin. Her sons’ wives became the daughters she never had and she treasured each and every one of them
