Janie Opal Merchant Irby, 76, a resident of Morton died Monday, March 31, 2014 at home. Funeral services will be held 11 am Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Branch Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 6-9 pm Tuesday, April 1, 2014 and 9-10:30 am Wednesday at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Morton. Rev. Michael Giles, Rev. Gayden Harrell and Rev. Paul Smith will officiate. Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Morton in charge of the services.
Mrs. Irby was a native of the Coal Bluff Community. She was the daughter of Grady and Ruby Lucille Craig Merchant. She was married for 54 years to Dwight G. Irby. Mrs. Irby was a member of the Branch Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher, pianist, organist and a very faithful worker in the church. She enjoyed visiting with the sick and lending a helping hand. She also enjoyed working in her flower beds and cooking for her family. Mrs. Irby was very instrumental in the Branch High School Reunions. She loved her family very much and spending time with them brought great joy to her life. She will be missed by all who loved and knew her.
Mrs. Irby was preceded in death by her parents, Grady and Ruby Lucille Craig Merchant, brothers, James, Wilber, Willie and Joe Merchant.
Mrs. Irby is survived by her husband, Dwight Irby of Morton; children, Garner Irby of Morton, David (Melanie) Irby or Morton, Terri (Bruce) Bairfield of Mendenhall and Paul (Lynn) Irby of Morton; brothers, Grandy Carl Merchant of Crystal Springs and Mark Merchant of Lake Harbor; sisters, Vivian Still of Monroe, LA, Rosie Laine Byrd of Huntsville, AL, Lovelle Smith of LaPlace, LA and Carolyn Lawrence of Sand Hill; 8 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
Serving and honoring Mrs. Irby as pallbearers were Bruce Bairfield, Justin Bairfield, Zachary Irby, Cory Rawson, Sam Irby, Michael Latham, Colin Jack Gordon and Matt McCurdy.
