Mr. Johnson, 80, died on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013 at St. Dominic’s Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi from complications following surgery. Jay was very devoted to his family, friends, neighbors, and church.
Mr. Johnson was born on June 22, 1932 in Humphreys County, MS to Dewitt and Sally Johnston. He attended Benton High School in Benton, MS and went into the Air Force in 1952. After boot camp at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX, he was trained as a dental assistant at a military base in the Great Lakes. From there, he was assigned to regular duty at Lake Charles AFB in Lake Charles, LA. The majority of Jay’s career was spent at Miller Transporters, Inc. working as a central dispatcher until he retired in 1998. He was married to his first wife, Mattie Gwendolyn Powell in 1953. Jay was married to her until she died in 1994. Jay married Ruth Johnson in 1995 and they enjoyed many years of traveling with the Mississippi Travel Trailer Club and Mississippi Airstream Travel Trailer Club until her death in 2012.
Mr. Johnson was survived by his brother, Charles Johnston, Alton, IL, and sister, Emilie Lansford, Ocean Springs, MS. His children are: Charlie Jon Johnston (Linda), Hazlehurst, MS; Harriet Johnston Brown (Gary), Madison, MS and Cathy Johnston Humphrey (Jackie), Florence, MS. His step children are: Scarlet Joly Bernard (Victor), San Jose, CA; Christopher Joly (Susan), Baton Rouge, LA. His grandchildren are: Emma Brown Geiger (Landon), Tupelo, MS; Madeline Brown, Madison, MS; Jason Humphrey and Justin Humphrey of Florence, MS. He has one great-grandchild, Rowyn Saige Geiger of Tupelo, MS. His grandchildren that he shared with Ruth are: Kristen Joly Renton (Jeff), Houston, TX; Kevin Joly, Baton Rouge, LA; Amy Bernard, Guilette Bernard, Victoria Bernard all of San Jose, CA; Madeline Pounders, Sumrall, MS and Michaela Lachney, Zachary, LA.
He was also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The visitation will be on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. The funeral services will be on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Flowood Baptist Church at 10:00 am with burial in Glenwood Cemetery in Yazoo City, MS.
